VENONA Project Breakthrough

If the VENONA Project was not successful, many of the "atomic spies" might have neven been identified.

Success: The Team compromises the Soviets encryption scheme. This results in the CIA discovering the identities of several atomic spies.

Failure: The Soviet encryption scheme is not compromised and the atomic spies provide the Soviet Union with much information.

Morton Sobell (with Max Elitcher) pass microfilm to Julius Rosenberg

Setting: 1948 June 30 - Catherine Slip, New York, New York
Sobell was an American engineer working for General Electric and Reeves Electronics on military and government contracts. He describes the information as "junk" and says they were of no value to the Soviet Union.

Success: The prevents Sobell from providing the Soviets with any useful information.

Failure: Sobell provides the Soviets with useful information.

Klaus Fuchs emigrates to East Germany

Setting: 1959 June 23 - Wakefield Prison, Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England to East Germany
The tutorial he gave to Qian Sanqiang and other Chinese physicists helped them to develop the bomb they tested five years later.

Success: The Team prevents Fuchs from providing China with information which allows them to develop a working atomic bomb.

Failure: Fuchs provides the Chinese that allows them to develop a working atomic bomb earlier than they would have.
